Keynotes & Sponsored Presentations

Bill Hoy is a featured speaker for conventions in homecare, hospice, funeral service, ministry, and counseling. Frequently, professional associations ask Dr. Hoy to provide a keynote addresss for a general session, either preceded by or followed by a one- to two-hour educational session. Here are a few of the topics on which Bill has presented recently. . .

Meeting Today's Challenges With the Bereaved. Professional caregivers realize every day that today's bereaved individuals and families are under enormous stress rarely seen a generation ago. The ongoing exposure to violence in the media, the fracturing of relationships that complicate grief, underlying psychopathology, and the unique economic challenges that characterize our generation are all challenges that must be faced by a host of professionals. Sharing both vision and implementation ideas, Bill addresses the plethora of challenges facing colleagues in this "brave new world."

Funeral Service and Hospice: Partners in Caring and Understanding. Though the professions are closely related, communication between hospice professionals and funeral directors sometimes lacks. Pairing his extensive experience overseeing hospice bereavement and pastoral care programs to his deep familiarity with the funeral service profession, Dr. Hoy helps colleagues in both hospice care and funeral service build bridges of understanding with each other, understanding how each profession thinks and what it values, as well as helping each group understand the unique pressures experienced by the other. After attending a workshop for funeral directors to better understand hospice, one funeral professional wrote, "I never realized the struggles they face. Now I think I can serve their staff more effectively.

Making Grief Ministry More Meaningful. Faith communities provide vital ministry to families in grief but clergy and volunteers alike sometimes have little training in this aspect of ministry. Bringing his formal theological education, and his experience as both a pastor and a healthcare chaplain together, Dr. Hoy helps clergy and volunteer alike discover new ways to care for the bereaved--both in their congregation and in the community.

What in the World Do I Say? How to Help a Grieving Friend. When a friend, colleague, or family member faces a loved one's death, most of us are afraid of "saying the wrong thing." Bill helps professional and lay audiences alike discover appropriate words to use, but more importantly, helps them find ways to communicate their concern in ways that are actually helpful to their hurting friends.

Failure, Finances, and Foreclosure: Supporting People Through Difficult Times. The economic crisis that began in late 2007 and continues today has created stress that many individuals could not even imagine a few years ago. Those who thought they were secure in homes, jobs, and retirement have discovered a new reality. Caregiving professionals and volunteers alike are faced with learning how to support people through troubling times, especially complicated by the reticense on the part of most people to discuss the "private world" of family or personal finance.

Even though Bill customizes each presentation for the intended audience, we are happy to show you a full catalog of his most recent presentation titles and summaries. To obtain this document, please just email us.

What Others are Saying. . .

It is rare to attend a training where the presenter is both a scholar and a clinician. This is the case anytime Dr. Hoy presents. His compassionate presentations are based in research and he always presents practical tools to assist clients. I have been particularly impressed at the cultural diversity and the spiritual sensitivity of his workshops.
--Paula Loring, LCSW, LMFT (San Antonio, Texas)

Vastly informative yet practical in his approach to the tough issues of life and death, Dr. Bill Hoy is a delightfully warm and engaging presenter.
--Jacqueline Kosewick, LMFT (Mission Viejo, California)

Bill provided a workshop for us attended by more than 80 of our school nurses, social workers, and counselors--to rave reviews from everyone. Our people are still talking about the helpfulness of this workshop and are asking when we can bring Bill back again!
--Jean Steversen, PhD (Rockingham County Schools, North Carolina)

This seminar was excellent with the most common response from our participants being, "This was the best presentation I've ever heard!" Thanks for the great tools you offered to our parish and community.
--Charles Castagna, (St. Ann's Church of Seal Beach, California)

In the 35 years I have been involved in funeral service, you are by far the best speaker I have heard on the issues of grief, offering suggestions on how to rearrange a life after the loss of a family member or friend.
--Rick Barry (HL Farmer & Sons of Haverhill, Massachusetts)
